Chapter Seven

Zane

Finn never came back last night. He got in the SUV, took that girl back home and now is only God knows where. I growl, not knowing whether to feel jealous or anxious at that fact. But whatever I feel toward my brother, that quickly pales in comparison to what I see on our land upon stepping out of the tents.

There is no visible growth of trees. No increased fertility. In fact, it looks less fertile than it did before. Less viable, and we spent ten million on that business last night. Axel spent that money without asking what any of us thought about it, I think, watching Axel step out of his tent. Kace, as if always connected to his twin, steps out of his own tent seconds after.

Kace looks about as disappointed as I feel.

Axel takes a little too long to look pissed off. I don’t know what it is, but as I watch him take in the view of our land, it’s like he has to decide to be irritable — put on the mask of anger at the sight — not legitimately feel it. At the same time that that mask comes down, he immediately spots me and his twin. “Zane! Kace! I want you both to run the length of our property, see if you can find any proof of the magic we worked. Scour it as wolves, so that we can get the best, most detailed picture possible!”

“Why aren’t you going to come with us? You’re perfectly capable of running with us, brother.” Kace makes direct eye contact, looking tense.

“Got business in town,” answers Axel.

“What kind of business? Surely, it’s not more important than checking out our land and making sure that spell we spent so much money on worked?” Heat flickers between them, jumping like a spark that might catch.

“Business that’s none of your business, Kace.”

“So, you’re gonna just spend all the money we have to our name on some spell, and then just leave everything to me and Zane?”

“I’ve got other details I’ve got to make sure are in working order as the eldest.” He bares his teeth. “Now do as I say, Kace and transform. Get running!”

“Not until you tell me what you have to leave us to go do in town!”

Just as Axel and Kace are about to go at each other’s throats, I run to put myself in between them. As I do, I think, maybe Finn had the right idea after all. Maybe staying away for the night with that girl was just the thing he needed. I could go for that right now. Much more so than breaking up this nonsense!

“Knock it off, you two!” A growl and a snarl are in my voice. “Kace, let’s just fucking do what he says! I don’t have time for this shit. I don’t have energy after everything else.” With that, I transform from human to wolf, and get running.

From behind me, I hear Axel leave in a huff.
